video stills on linux

When movies are posted on boingboing, they post a few stills of the movie which gives you an idea of what it’s like. I think it makes the post a lot better, so I tried doing it by hitting the print screen button when the movie was paused, but that didn’t work.

I then found that Totem, the Gnome video player, lets you take video stills. It was a bit of a pain to get Totem to work right, but once it was working, it was a cinch to get video stills.

All you do is pause the video, go to the Edit menu and select the ‘Take Screenshot’ option.

Here’s a great family guy clip I came across, and I’ve included a few video stills just for fun. My favorite part is when he says, “I don’t know!” in the last screen.

  1. Actually, my favourite part was how horribly offense the whole episode was! Well, maybe not horribly offensive, but edgy, at least. It’s refreshing (the Simpsons sometimes plays it too safe). Was the greased up deaf guy in this episode?

And you’re right, the “Take on Me/Me On” skit at the beginning is great.

  2. Wooo hoo, Dan a FG fan? Yay :)

Now if I can just figure out how I can take stills for VLC Player (My favorite player). I searched for an answer (I spent like five minutes on that matter), but got something about overlay on windows and some bit with graphic cards. If you happen to know of answer, do let me know. :)

Hmm… btw would you happen to know what that chris getting pulled in was all about? Was it a spoof of something? None-the-less it was quite funny. You must catch the movie (that got leaked on to the net).

  3. Teja: It’s a spoof of the music video of the song that’s playing (“Take on Me” by A-ha). In it, a girl was pulled into a world of drawings and it was pretty revolutionary at the time.

I haven’t used VLC, so I’m not sure if it can do video stills or not. The wiki has a section about capturing and recording but it’s empty. Maybe they want to add the feature but it’s not there right now.

  7. I guess I could try. The only problem is that the images are pretty small and probably wouldn’t look all that good if magnified.

  10. By the way, you can take video stills in Windows with Windows Movie Maker. Just open up the video, pause the preview at the right location and use the little camera icon.
