cows are smarter than we thought

As I’ve demonstrated in the past, I like cows. Not the actual animal so much as talking about them. I find it humorous when people moo (within reason) and I think cows can be a great source of entertainment.

However, now that I know that cows are smarter than we thought, I feel I should make a public apology to all cows everywhere, especially any that may be reading this, for any offensive things I said about them.

The article describes how they enjoy intellectual challenges.

“In one study, researchers challenged the animals with a task where they had to find how to open a door to get some food. An electroencephalograph was used to measure their brainwaves.

‘Their brainwaves showed their excitement; their heartbeat went up and some even jumped into the air. We called it their Eureka moment,’ said Broom.”

I find it rather disturbing that cows were referred to as “gay nymphomaniacs.” I quote,

“Dairy cow herds can also be intensely sexual. Webster describes how the cows become excited when one of the herd comes into heat and start trying to mount her. ‘Cows look calm, but really they are gay nymphomaniacs,” he said.”

If cows ever take over the world, I for one would like to welcome our new cow overlords with a hearty congratulations. All I ask is that I not be milked.

  1. This morning I was reading a post about zombies over at kulturblog:

    http://www.kulturblog.com/kulturblog/2005/02/a_taste_for_fle.html

For some reason my response to that article was a rather flippant question “but what about cow zombies?”

Then I saw your post here and had to laugh because I share many of the same feelings you expressed here in this post. Cows are funny and cool for some reason. I’m not sure why. Oh … and they taste good too.

  2. There is a book, The Pig Who Ran a Red Light, about a farm pig who wants to do everything the cow does, such as drive a tracter. Naturally, the owner accepts the fact that the cow can drive but gets mad at the pig when it tries to do so too. It always made me wonder why it was acceptable for the cow to drive. Now I know.

  3. Cows are awesome. I’m going on a trip to India soon and on one travel site, I saw cows on the beaches of Goa http://www.geocities.com/baksheeshuk/images/goa/beachCows.jpg. I thought you’d get a kick out of it. Heh.

  8. I love cows! I always knew they were smart. I spent all my summers as a youth on my grandparents’ dairy farm. They all had unique and wonderful personalities.
