I agree with most of Phil Windley’s ideas on how to start a blog. With this blog I don’t follow #4 very well, but that kind of conflicts with #6. There are so many things I’m interested in it’s hard to just pick one subject area and stick to it.
And by picking a topic so focused as Enterprise Computing he’s really decreased the odds of gaining the interest of new readers. I discuss at least five different topics on my blog and I think my readers are pretty dedicated. I think it’s better to choose several unrelated topics and dedicate equal time to each one. It’s worked for me, I think.
4 and 6 seemed contradictory to me too. As “technically challenged” I’m not even sure what “Enterprise Computing” entails. Anyway, I picked a theme of conversation and discuss topics that are pertinent to my life and attempt to engage others. Anyway, I thank you for the post – I thought it had some good points that can help me as a new blogger.
BTW – When I added my new site to the “Ecosystem” I found that I am still a “Flippery Fish.”
It sounds like he is speaking about blogs more in the original sense rather than journal blogs or combination ones.
