stomping grapes on a raised platform

Matt Haughey posted one of the funniest news clips I’ve seen in a long, long time. I call it, “Ooooo, ooo, ooo, ooowww, oooo, I can’t breath!

It’s probably rude to think that’s funny, but I seriously thought the newscasters shown after the incident were going to bust up laughing. I say it’s okay to laugh because she only had the wind knocked out of her. Heck, I fell out of a tree once on my back and probably made similar noises when I landed. If it had been caught on tape, it would have been funny to watch after the fact.

In case you don’t have quicktime, here’s a quick synopsis:

It’s boring at first, but the hilarious part comes at the end. Two women are stomping grapes in buckets while perched atop a wooden platform. It’s a contest to see who can produce the most grape juice. Suddenly the journalist says, “Stop”, and holds her hands out like an umpire yelling safe. The other lady stops stomping, and the journalist starts again, but this time she’s going double-time like she’s rushing to win with renewed enthusiasm. She then tries to step out of the bucket and loses her footing, flopping onto the ground and crying out that she can’t breathe.

Then we jump to two journalists in the studio who were watching the whole thing and, while shaking their heads in dismay, say they hope she’s alright.

  1. Haha! I wish the audio had worked on my computer. And I also wish it hadn’t been that pixelated, because I swear, those two anchors look exactly like my local news people. Did they say what city they were in? Or, are affiliates just cloning news anchors now so that every station’s exactly the same?

  2. I didn’t hear them say where it was, but some other links named the movie ‘atlanta grape’.

I found this grape stomping contest in Seattle, WA but who knows if that’s where this one was.

  3. By the way, I think all applicants should be required to watch that video before sending in their grape-stomping application.

Who would have guessed it could be so perilous?

I, the undersigned, attest and verify that I am physically fit and have full knowledge of the risks involved. I have read the entry information and rules and certify by my signature my compliance. I hereby release Festa Italiana, Seattle Center, the City of Seattle and any and all individuals or companies associated with the event from responsibility for any injuries or damages I may suffer as a result of my participation in the Bolla Grape Stomp.

  4. Nope — it wasn’t Seattle. Our Fox news station is Fox 13.
Poor thing fell so *hard* — I hope she didn’t break anything. Though her pride may be on crutches for a while . . . .

  7. Ah, then I’m almost positive that’s where it was then. (given the name of the other MPEG).

Jan: Did you try viewing the Grape_Stompin.mpeg?

That may work if you don’t have Quicktime installed.

  8. Argh, I can’t access Gmail. I’m getting the “Oops … try again in a few seconds” popup whenever I try to access a Gmail page. Are you still able to get in, and if so can you contact them on my behalf? My username is mperuzzi. Thanks – this has me scared!

  12. This is at WAGA-TV in Atlanta. It was a while ago because the female anchor was hired at WUSA-TV in Washington and recently completed a stint there. The building in the background is part of Chateau Elan, a high dollar resort/vineyard/winery outside of the Georgian metropolis.

  25. Since the link above doesn’t work anymore, check out the video at:

    http://www.ifilm.com/ifilmdetail/2685625

(In case this link ever becomes inactive, just go to http://www.ifilm.com/webjunk and look around for the “Grape Lady” video.)

I agree that it’s funny because we’ve all had the wind knocked out of us at some point — we just didn’t have any idea we sounded like that!! You feel like you’re going to die for a moment, and then you’re just fine. : )
