radio to mp3

If I hear a song I like on the radio, I google the lyrics and download the song. If I already like the artist, I’ll probably buy the album. If I don’t know the artist, I’ll listen to more of their songs to gauge my interest.

I’ve done this with songs like “Forever and For Always” by Shania Twain, Bob Carlisle’s “Lately” and Sixpence None the Richer’s cover of “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and The Corrs’ “Runaway.” I found the lyrics for “Lately” at http://www.starfiresredwall.net/chaos/lyrics/lately.html and a list of songs at the root of the lyrics directory. I like almost all of the ones I recognize, so it stands to reason that I would like the rest if I heard them. I plan to fire up Kazaa to verify that hypothesis, but I was surprised to find someone with musical tastes so similar to mine. The rather eclectic list includes Billy Joel, Sister Hazel, Blink 182, Vertical Horizon, The Righteous Brothers, Dan Fogelberg, Bread, Barenaked Ladies and Third Eye Blind.

  1. I get tickled when I find someone on Kazaa or collegeclub or some other web based gathering place that has very similiar interests. That’s like halloween when you open your treat bag and discover your favorite candies. Or like Christmas morning when you discover Santa has brought all your fav things.

It’s something that must be treasured. Oh, and Dan, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find people who really enjoy “Billy Joel, Sister Hazel, Blink 182, Vertical Horizon, The Righteous Brothers, Dan Fogelberg, Bread, Barenaked Ladies and Third Eye Blind.” Of course, the Dan Fogelberg option is one many people would not advertise too loud.

  2. Someone told me the same thing about not advertising that I liked Bread, but if I don’t advertise it, how will others have a Halloween and Christmas celebration after seeing the music I like?

  3. I agree, most of the above artists have been very popular at one point. Everyone who’s into music has heard of them, at least. And you can probably hear most of them. Shouldn’t be hard at all to find others who like them.

Heck, if I can find others who like my music, you should have no problem at all. ;)

  4. Er, that was supposed to be ‘hear most of them on the radio’.

  5. I told you that I was surprised to see a boy advertising that he liked Bread. Did I tell you that a friend of mine calls the Anthology album “the many faces of Richard Gere”? LOL That’s what the cover looks like.

I don’t own anything by Sixpence none the richer but I’m tempted. I like everything I’ve heard thus far from them, especially “Breath your name”.

  6. Renee: I thought you were the one who had said that but I wasn’t sure.

Levi: My surprise was due to the the combination of the groups, not that people liked the individual bands. There are lots of people who like Vertical Horizon, but I would wager that of those, not many also like the Righteous Brothers, Bread and Dan Fogelberg. By the same token, people who like the Righteous Brothers, Dan Fogelberg and Bread are less likely to be fans of Blink 182.
