ben stein on american enterprise

Ben Stein, host of the show Win Ben Stein’s Money wrote an article (second part) complaining that we’re squelching what gives this country an edge and asks, “What would it take to kill innovation altogether?”

He believes we’re already far down the road on many of them, but I disagree. The problems are usually with a small number of people and the country as a whole is not as bleak as the picture he paints. On the other hand, if we don’t address the problems and they are permitted to grow, we have the potential to extinguish the innovative spirit of our society. If that happens, we will not be able to continue progressing as rapidly and some other country will pass us by.

More discussion about this can be found on the mefi post I made.

  1. A lot of this stuff seems to follow the themes of his new book, “How to Ruin Your Life”. I read through some of that book at B&N, and it’s pretty entertaining. Much better than most self-help stuff, but still not as good as Mr. T.

  2. As a society we’ve been on our way to hell in a handbag for quite some time now. As for the things that Stein has said, it’s nothing new. People have been saying it for years and it’s not like it should be a big surprise. Every great empire has fallen in the past, why should we be any different?

  4. I do? How quaint. I wish someone had told me.

If you want to learn about investing your money, The Motley Fool is a good resource.
