metrosexuals

Are you a modern man who likes to shop, wear the latest fashions and use more hand lotion than most women? You may be part of a new trend that’s sweeping a nation of formerly manly men. Make way for Metrosexuals.

If you’re not sure you qualify, take the quiz to see if you’ve got what it takes. I scored a 12, the highest score of the furthest category from a metrosexual. I can’t say I’m disappointed.

  1. I got an 11, but that doesn’t mean I’m an less a man than Dan (heh, another rhyme). They should have a question on tools. I’ve got lots of tools. I spent last night helping a plumber. That’s got to account for something.

  2. The fact that you have a post preceding this involving mullets confirms that you are not a metrosexual.

  3. I scored an 11, but I get the feeling that _they_ think that’s a bad thing. IMHO, Metrosexual = Candy-ass pretty boy.

  4. I think the fact that you guys scored so low on the quiz is a good sign. What woman wants to date a man who requires more maintenance than she?

  5. So you’re saying the poor metrosexuals won’t have anyone to date?

Comment by dan on August 7, 2003 @ 11:40 am
  6. I think the women metrosexuals date like metrosexuals because they can both talk about their manicurists and the latest sale at Saks to each other.

  7. Hey, Dan, I was wondering what kind of google text ads this would produce but then I noticed the ads are no longer on this site at all. Did you have to remove them?

Comment by Renee on August 7, 2003 @ 11:55 am
  8. I didn’t have to, but I got a response to my question and they have updated their policies to explicitly mention blogs.

They also asked me to remove the request for clicks.

  9. Those jerks.

I wonder if metrosexuals tend to use straws in their pop cans.

  10. Dan, I’m saying that the poor metrosexuals would have to fight thier dates for space in the car’s rear view mirror to check their makeup and hair. What woman wants to share The Mirror? It would get old after a while.

Also, I don’t think I could date a guy who spent more money on grooming products than I do. Something’s just wrong about that.

I pity the poor women they marry. Can you imagine the fights over the hair dryer they would have in the morning? Can you see the disputes over who used the last of the hand lotion and didn’t replace it? Personally, the man who lays one hand on my Estee Lauder Daywear will die a painful and horrifying death. I can barely afford to buy it for myself, no way I would share it.

A woman would be nuts to date one. That’s all I’m saying.

  11. I’ve lived with high maintenance gay men before. It was an endearing quality for them. It’s an annoying quality in straight men.

Comment by Renee on August 7, 2003 @ 1:52 pm
  12. Jan: I can see your point, but if all girls felt that way, all metrosexuals would have no one to date. Perhaps they are compatible with manly women.

Comment by dan on August 7, 2003 @ 3:21 pm
  13. I like what Jan says, but I’ve seen some pretty femmy guys get some cute girls. It’s depressing. I was really good friends with one of the girl’s roommates and she thought what he did (dressing up in skirts and dancing) was cute. I was disgusted.

Comment by Cameron on August 7, 2003 @ 3:52 pm
  14. A guy “dressing up in skirts and dancing?” I think that goes a little beyond being a metrosexual. I think that’s venturing into the world of cross-dressing, which is another thing entirely and is completely unacceptable in a date.

I’m not the only one who thinks manly men are the best. Mona Charen agrees with me.

  22. I scored a 20 but I don’t care I am secure in my sexuality. I love to pamper myself and take care of myself. I deserve it and I think most guys are to scared to try these things becsue they aren’t secure in there sexuality. Grow up guys and become a METROSEXUAL!

  23. If a metrosexual is a man who grooms himself, then count me in. Frankly, if the only requirement to be a “manly man” is to let your appearance go, women would be much, much lonelier. Come on ladies, you know the first guy you check out in public is the one with combed hair, matching clothes, and a confident attitude.

  24. If a metrosexual is a man who grooms himself, then count me in.

I would say there’s a difference between being well-groomed and getting facials and manicures. The former is to be expected, the latter is not as common.

  27. Men should always look thier best. I was raised by seven women. They have taught me a lot and I am proud of myself, especially the way I look. Even more so…. ask women what they may like. Given a few women want a manly construction worker. But most women don’t want romance with a sweaty, hairy, smelly, unemotional ox. They want someone to relate with and metro’s can relate. Like cameron says, we are the boys with your girlfriends, and even the old school mafia had this kind of hygen. Along with pampering I believe most of us practice boxing, sports, and martial arts…. who is the real tough guy?

  28. O.K. to the high school kid- first of all grow up junior- OK- grow some hair on your nuts and then we can talk- Id check twice before makin proclomations about peoples girlfreinds- look closely bro- youll find out she aint a girl at all- just another well-groomed METROSEXUAL!!!! Im sorry this whole fad makes me sick- Why cant it be like it was- remember the words of the late great Carrol O’Connor- “Girls were girls and men were men” I scored an 8 and i wouldnt have it any other way- and queer eye for the straight guy is without a doubt the gayest show ever- Straight guy- Queer eye- they dont belong together- why would a straight guy need a queer eye anyway- you all make me sick get a f-in life

  29. I’m a gay man who scored a nine on the quiz. My straight best friend routinely makes suggestions about what I should wear. We call it “Straight Eye for the Queer Guy.”
I like men who look good, but there is a definite line somewhere. It just seems way effeminate for a man to take so much time and energy on his appearance. But men have always done it, just less than women. Guess what bodybuilding is really all about? Just primping.

  30. Hey, why do so many women complain that they wouldn’t want a man who used more hair products that herself, or would hog the mirror. I reckon of lot of metrosexuals could be a straight girls dream! As long as he’s not totally vain, isn’t a refreshing type of man? I wouldn’t mind swapping traditional gender roles a bit. Wouldn’t it be cool to have a man who could actaully help you do your hair? He might even be able to help you wax, and he’d like to shop. I’m female and i get stereotyped as loving to shop-I can’t shop for long! And just because he knows how to groom himself doesn’t necessarily mean he doesn’t know about traditional ‘manly’ things. He’s just a straight guy who has learnt to look after his more sesitive side. Evolution, anyone! I wouldn’t mind a metrosexual man at all.

  31. by the way, mike you seem very threatened. what’s wrong with blurring the gender lines, how boring do you want life to be!

Comment by mega opinion women on November 9, 2003 @ 12:55 am
  32. ok, there have to be degrees of metrosexuality, you can’t go stereotyping every single one one as getting facials, not that there’s anything wrong with it. I’m just saying, its the concept that’s important, not the ‘how much hand lotion’ gauge to metrosexuality.

I think i’m finished my rant now-three posts later :)

  33. Well, I scored an 11-12 (I wasn’t sure about one of the questions.) So, I guess I’m not a metersexal. Whoody-frickin-do. I think that a guy should be able to do whatever he wants- why should anyone conform to your idea of masculinity? Buying nice clothing makes a guy less manly? What is and isn’t manly is always changing, just like any other fad or trend. There’s no reason to make such a big deal over what other people do, geez…. Meterosexual is a stupid word, just another meaningless catagory that plays on people’s security, making them feel better or worse about themselves depending on what image they want of themselves relative to how they act in real life. Men are men whether they drink cocktails and wear armani suits or wear t-shirts and blue jeans and drink beer. (I’m sorry, but this sort of pisses me off.)

  34. I scored an 18 wich was one away from being a metrosexual, butI do consider myself one. Im strait but there is no problem with having gay charictoristics. Everybody these days are trying to act black and i bet you in the future everybodys going to act metrosexual. Im glad im one of the first on the band wagon.

  35. I scored a 23, and I’m surely not gay, i have had a lot of girlfriends. I love girls, as a matter of fact, I am only 13 and I am proud to be a metrosexual. I love to shop and i really dont get manicures only once a month, I also think that metrosexuals are NOT the same as homosexuals. Being gay is a sin! Bye

  36. I scored a 15. Not quite into the manicures. But while at home, I’m most often found either gardening or cooking. My wife loves me doing both.

  37. My wife and I are both Metro and we never fight over anything…she appreciates my picking out her clothes for her, its easier and she likes it if I pick out the sexy outfits for her to wear. She appreciates it that I always look good and dress sexy for any situation. Cleaning the garage last weekend I was in short shorts…a tight white t-shirt and a denim jacket with rolled up sleeves and the collar up…she couldn’t take her eyes off of me the entire time I was cleaning…especially when i had to bend over…I take very good care of my skin and body…because it feels good to do that and its very pleasing to her eyes…she is very gorgeous herself…and after 20 years of marriage, I am the only person who has ever seen her in a pair of sweats…being metro is not about impressing anyone…its about a lifestyle of feeling good about yourself…its the best diet also…if you truly care about how you feel and look…you will creat a lifestyle…not deprivation and starvation…good luck everyone

  38. My name is Matt. I am 15 years old and I think that I am a mertosexual. I know that I’m not gay or anything like that becasue I think that girls are the most awseome creatures ever. For about one year now I’ve been wondering if I was a metrosexual. And, now i think that I cna saftley say that I am. It’s not a bad thing to be a metrosexual. All, of my freinds have no problem with me being a guy who loves to go shopping at Abercrombie and American Eagle. All of my girl freinds always complemint my outfits and say that I have good taste. Being a metrosexual, in my opinion is much better than being someone that has no sense of fashion and doesnt care how they look. I enjoy the way that I live very much and I dont let anyone make fun of me along teh way because I dress better than they do. Thats all that I have to say about beign a metrosexual. If anyone has anything to say about what I wrote, feel free to email me at [email protected].
