better days

Is the world a better place now than in days past?

An interesting look at how our society has improved and regressed over time.

  1. We love to romanticize the past, don’t we?

I used to say the 70s were the worst decade imaginable and now I say at least people knew their neighbors and you didn’t have to worry about car jackings and road rage.

  2. He’s listed a lot more good things than bad, and I don’t even agree with some of the bad ones. Sure, now is worse in some areas, but it’s much better in others. I don’t think you can say now is worse. Heck, go back to the dark ages.

  3. It’s true, we often glorify the past and think that nothing new and exciting will happen during our lifetime. I heard that when the US patent office opened, the manager predicted they would be closed in a few years because nothing new would be invented.

On the flip side, certain areas of society are headed in the wrong direction and don’t appear to be stopping anytime soon.

Dickens expressed it eloquently. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

  4. Wasn’t there a song in the last few years that wents something like “I’ve seen better days, I been the star of many plays, I’ve seen better days then bottom dropped out” Or something like that?

  5. Yup, I had that song in mind when I wrote the title. The song is Better Days by Citizen King.

  6. Uh huh. And whatever happened to them? There was a spot in the song, which I didn’t notice in the lyrics, where there girl says something like, “Do you like my Gucci purse?” and this guy says, “Beautiful, baby.”

  7. I have no idea what happened to them, I just heard the song on the radio.

I changed the link to another set of lyrics that has the, “Do you like my Gucci bag? That’s beautiful, beautiful.”

  8. So many promising bands disappear after 1 or 2 songs.

Funny story involving a not so promising band: There was this song (a lame one, IMO) called “Chains” that was out in the early 90s. It was a one-hit wonder by a band called His Boy Elroy. One of my friends dated this pathological liar a couple years later who swore he was their drummer. I’m sure he wasn’t because 1) he was drifting from job to job in Omaha 2) he lied about everything including his name and 3) he lived with his parents.

  9. If you remember what he looked like you can confirm that he was lying by looking at their pictures.

  10. Nope, he’s not there and according to their bio, they’ve been together over 10 years. I suspect the pathological liar maybe met him at some point.

Why, if you were going to lie about yourself, you would say you were in a 1-hit-wonder band, I do not know.

  11. Renee- He lied because he wanted to feel important. Something I just learned about in the book “How To Win Friends & Influence People”. So did you make him feel important Renee? You kissed him, didn’t you?

Good book by the way. If anyone else wants to read it, ask Dan. He could quote the book from memory.

  12. Forsooth, it is true.

  13. Mel, ewww! I didn’t go out with him, my friend did.

He also told us that his boss at one of his jobs had a pierced scrotum. Now how he would know this, I don’t know and wouldn’t want to know. I’m sure he made it up but why? This did not impress us in the slightest.

  14. Perhaps the guys could answer Renee’s question. If I understood how guys think I would be famous.

  15. There are female pathological liars too, it’s not just a guy thing. People get a thrill from it, I don’t know that there’s a clear reason why. Maybe they like to shock people, or get attention, be it good or bad.

  16. And, besides being a liar, he sounds like a whacko. Guys don’t talk about other guys’ genitals in any way. Period.

  17. It’s true. I was going to write a funny comment that would prove Cameron wrong, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it.
