gmail at last

After a great deal of searches and requests, I finally managed to get a GMail invitation. My impression so far: it’s great.

And it’s not just the 1000MB of disk space. Although that is a very nice feature, there are several others that make it far superior to my previous account, Yahoo Mail, which had a disk quota of 6MB. A few of the highlights:

1. No more images and flash movies on the page.
2. No more advertisements added to each outgoing message.
3. Keeps track of conversations (similar to threading)
4. Automatically populates the address book with outgoing mail.
5. Keyboard shortcuts. (That’s just cool).

  1. I also heard that you can do google-searching throughout your own mailbox. For a large collection of messages, that’s just plain cool too.

Comment by Cameron on May 4, 2004 @ 10:32 am
  2. That is correct. You can search all your e-mails, and you can even search the web from your Inbox if you want.

Comment by dan on May 4, 2004 @ 10:36 am
  3. Oh, another feature I forgot to mention is auto-complete. When you’re composing a message you can begin typing the name or e-mail address of someone and it will display a list of matching names. It’s far better than the nicknames feature that Yahoo Mail provided.

  4. Damn! How’d you get an invite?! ;)

  5. I spent several hours searching through blogs that were offering GMail accounts. Most of the ones I found had already given away their last ones, but I kept looking and eventually found a Google employee who had 50 to give away. She’s already out.

You can try this site. He has 10 invites left and wants you to make an interesting comment on one of his other blog entries.

If that doesn’t work, try searching for extra gmail invites until you find someone who has some extras.

  6. I have tried this (search for gmail invites) quite a lot but no luck :( Is there any other way you know I can try to get a gmail acct? I too happened to see a friend use gmail and my first impression was that it’s great!

Desperately looking to get one for myself :(

  7. Carl,

Keep trying. I had an invite for Mother’s Day and I’m guessing lots of other people did too, so that might get you one. (A possible search: ‘gmail invitation mother’s day’)

If I get any more, I’ll get back to you.

Comment by dan on May 13, 2004 @ 2:23 am
  8. It’s a nightmare trying to get an invite, lol. People are selling them for upwards of $100 on Ebay.

Comment by Manda on May 13, 2004 @ 6:10 am
  9. It can be difficult, but I spent several hours late one night searching for invites. The results were 4 invitations within the next week and a week or so later, a fifth.

So they’re out there, you just have to keep at it unless you’re willing to wait until signups are open to the public.

  10. Dammn.. I’m browsing google for about 3 hours and I didn’t find anything yet.

  15. I’ve been trying to compair online ‘web based’ email services for an article to be presented on http://www.overclockers.com (mainpage) and am in need of an invite (2 would be great, but I’m not gonna push my luck). I recently finished updating my review of yahoo mail plus (pay version) and yahoo mail (free version) after their recent storage upgrades (2GB and 100MB respectively). Any and all help (actual invite or info on where to reliably ontain one) would be most appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

  29. You can get a gmail account from this site..

    http://isnoop.net/gmailomatic.php

No begging, grovelling required! I was a bit hesitant if this was for real, used an old Hotmail account just in case and I got an invite, it works fine and is legit. If there are no invites left just try later, I’ve had 3 or 4 invites from the site, it works great.
