fluffernutters

I’m a big fan of fluffernutters, but whenever I’ve mentioned them to people outside of the northeastern US, I’ve gotten strange looks. I was once talking with a group of people who all used the term as a euphemism for farting, which resulted in several smirks when I talked about how much I liked them.

In any case, for the uninitiated, fluffernutters are simply sandwiches made of marshmallow fluff and peanut butter. I didn’t realize it was specific to the area where I grew up until I went elsewhere and found that no one knew what they were.

I also learned about some legislation that threatened to restrict the delicious sandwiches from elementary school.

Thankfully he was ridiculed enough to drop it.

  2. Chad: They are quite tasty, but unfortunately you can’t find marshmallow fluff in other parts of the US very easily.

I did find that you can purchase tubs of fluff. 3 16oz tubs are about $15. Not too shabby.

  3. I have only ever heard the term “fluffernutter” as it applies to the sandwich, and not to bodily functions! Ewww…

  5. Yeah, the fluffernutter hub-bub was back here in Massachusetts, and the state legislator makes a good point, that they aren’t the most healthy things to be serving to school kids, what with our issues with childhood obesity and all, but I think legislation, and singling out a funny-sounding sandwhich may have been a bit of a heavy-handed, misplaced way to try to go about it.

But I don’t remember us ever having fluffernutters much as kids. We didn’t have much sugary cereals, never mind a bottle of sugar and fat. Did you become a fan of them sometime later?

  6. I don’t remember us having them much as kids, so it wasn’t a frequent indulgence, but I had enough of them at friends’ houses and at school that I became quite fond of them.

  7. […] Fluffernutter, I’ve only learned of this word just last week, and ever since, I’ve been wanting to try one. What is it? Well, simply put, it’s Marshmallow Fluff and Peanut Butter between a couple of slices of bread. Read the wikipedia entry for a little more insight. […]
