upgraded to wordpress 1.2.1

I just upgraded to WordPress 1.2.1 which has two security fixes as well as the login code from 1.3, so if you’re using WordPress, you may want to upgrade. I believe I have almost everything straightened out, although my bug fix for editing comments is still necessary, and I had to redo the administration page changes to make it work in Opera.

I now have notifications working too, so if you’re subscribed you should have gotten an e-mail. As always, please let me know if you notice any errors or something that’s not working.

I’ve been toying with different plugins to stop comment spam and haven’t found any that I’m really pleased with yet. I’m thinking I may just use the built-in comment moderation options for now and see how that goes.

Now that I’m finishing up with the configuration, I’m thinking about writing a plugin but I haven’t figured out what I want it to do. I’ve also thought about improving upon some existing plugins, which would probably be the fastest way to help improve what’s available to the WordPress community.

  1. I’ve been receiving comments from you for a long time! When did you switch to WP? I don’t remember that. (Which means it was a seamless transition!)

  2. I switched five days ago and just barely added a plugin for new post notifications. WordPress doesn’t have it built in like Movable Type does, so I had to install and configure a plugin.

I’m glad it has been seamless. That was my goal.

  3. Brian Meidell has created a beautiful threaded comments plugin. If you’re looking for a possible project, it would be really cool to see that plugin with a built-in live comment preview function. There’s a plugin out there already that does live comment preview but getting these two in one package would be really something.

Then again, I’m sure you could come up with some projects on your own. :) Just thought I’d add an idea to the pile.

  4. One other plugin that could use some tweaking is the plugin that creates graphic titles (as I’m using on my blog). This plugin makes very nice graphic titles with the font of your choice, but the graphic title is not actually sized to the title and as a result does not center well. If you are able to use your coding expertise to make the graphic title more closely approximate the actual size of the title words, a lot of people would be interested. Someone was working on a version of this called Imagepress but it appears to have been indefinitely delayed.

  5. Dan, have you tried that WPBlacklist 2.5?

Comment by Teja on October 9, 2004 @ 7:05 am
  6. Yes, I installed it and imported my blacklist from Movable Type but for some strange reason it would send every single comment to the moderation queue, so I deactivated the plugin for now.

  7. To be honest I find that if there is more than one link in a comment then it is spam.
I just configure wordpress for 2 spam words and its been fine so far :)

  8. That’s not a bad idea. I’m waiting to get hit with some to decide how best to stop it, but I haven’t gotten anything yet. Not that I’m complaining of course.

  9. I’d like to try and find out if it’s a bug in WPBlacklist which was causing everything to go into the moderation queue or if it was something added to the blacklist which shouldn’t be there. Would you like to help? If you would, could you e-mail me? Thanks!

  10. Danithew: I e-mailed you a while ago about those two plugins but never heard back. I’d be happy to help if you send me the URLs of them.

Fahim: I’d be happy to help. I just e-mailed you.
