NY Times columnist David Pogue (@pogue on twitter) has recently kicked of a campaign to “Take Back the Beep” about just this. A link to his stuff was below the article to which you linked, and it seems to be picking up some steam. Knowing “1 * #” may solve much of the problem, but maybe it could get even better!
