Forge a fantastic favicon from a photo

Since I last wrote about creating a favicon from a picture, several new methods have been created. After all it was almost 4 years ago (nearly to the day) and a lot can happen in four years.

I discovered that not all favicon generators are created equal. To create a new favicon for my coin collecting site I used several different methods.

I started with this image.

$20 Saint Gauden Gold Piece

And got the images below. The list is sorted by how much I liked the resulting icon.

DeGraeve favicon DeGraeve – The best thing about this generator is the ability to crop the image first, allowing you to make best use of the 16×16 space.

Dynamic Drive favicon Dynamic Drive – This generator didn’t have many bells and whistles, but it created a clean looking icon.

Real World Graphics favicon Real World Graphics – This one looks okay, but I liked the ones above more.

GraphicsGuru Graphics Guru – It’s hard to tell the difference between this one and the one from Real World Graphics.

HTML Kit favicon HTML Kit – I was disappointed with this one. It doesn’t look as good as the others.

IRFanView favicon IRFanView – To be fair, this application gives you more ways to alter the icon than anything else. I just used the default settings to create a 16×16 icon and this is what it created. I’m sure you could do better.
