video stills on linux

When movies are posted on boingboing, they post a few stills of the movie which gives you an idea of what it’s like. I think it makes the post a lot better, so I tried doing it by hitting the print screen button when the movie was paused, but that didn’t work.

I then found that Totem, the Gnome video player, lets you take video stills. It was a bit of a pain to get Totem to work right, but once it was working, it was a cinch to get video stills.

All you do is pause the video, go to the Edit menu and select the ‘Take Screenshot’ option.

Here’s a great family guy clip I came across, and I’ve included a few video stills just for fun. My favorite part is when he says, “I don’t know!” in the last screen.
