how to delete a yahoo account

When I wrote about the Yahoo Mail Archiver I never expected to be deluged by requests for me to close Yahoo accounts. For some reason people began entering their Yahoo e-mail addresses into my e-mail notification form with the unsubscribe radio button selected.

At first I was curious why I was getting unsubscribe requests from people that were not on the notification list, but I eventually got some comments that clued me in to the fact that they thought I had the power to close their Yahoo accounts. The odd part is that I hadn’t even mentioned closing my account (in fact, it’s still open to this day). I was just explaining how you could archive your e-mail. It doesn’t make any sense, but a lot of things don’t make sense, so I just asked people to stop, and closed comments on the post so people would stop bugging me.

I wouldn’t have given it another thought, but this evening my sister asked me how to close her Yahoo mail account. I finally looked in the Yahoo help section to see how to close an account. As it turns out, it’s a very simple process. In retrospect, I should have made this information available to people instead of telling them to stop using my notification form, but that’s water under the bridge.

So, for anyone who still wants to delete their Yahoo account, don’t unsubscribe from my blog notification form, just do the following:

Go to the Yahoo account deletion page and login with your username and password. Then, to confirm once and for all that you want to delete everything associated with your login profile, enter your password again and click the button that says ‘Terminate this Account.’

Your account is now gone.
