If the number says “Unknown”, I don’t answer. Our cells phones are our only phones now. There was no point in duplicating services and money with a land line.

Be prepared for more number portability fees, they will kick in this month for cell phones and a second one for land lines. When I still had a land line, I found it interesting that 36% of my bill was fees and taxes. That SUCKS!

I’ve pretty much only received calls on my cell from random survey callers and magazines I’ve subscribed to. It’s been my only phone for close to two years now, so I’ve given it out quite a bit. I certainly hope this doesn’t change.

I’ve never really gotten telemarketing calls on my cell phone and I like it like that. I figure if I have problems, I will just put the number on the do-not-call list, and make little voodoo dolls of the telemarketers and torture them (since in effect, that’s what they’re doing to me). I used to rarely give my phone number out, but now I do it often, since it’s my only number. We’ll see if it worsens.

I have to admit that I spent time during summer breaks in college as a telemarketer. Before I’m burned at the stake, let me explain that I only made hot calls, never cold calls. Still, people were pretty rude. It was a horrible, thankless job that made me want to stay in school so I wouldn’t have to do that forever.

Anyway, the company I worked for had a strict no-calls-to-cell-phones policy that was rare. I learned from other telemarketers that most companies target cell phones because people are more likely to answer an unknown incoming call on thier cell phone than on thier home land line. It’s why telemarketing companies love to buy cold contact lists from cell phone companies. So if you get a lot of telemarketing calls on your cell phone, you can probably blame your service provider for selling your information.
