strange names

Bongo. Oryx. Eland. Dik-dik. Kudu.

What do the above words have in common? (No fair researching them)

A. Musical instruments.

B. Exotic fruit.

C. Words in Swahili.

D. Antelopes.

E. African cities.

  1. They sound like fringe web site names, but I think they’re musical instruments. Or at least, I know a bongo is a drum.

      » Comment by Jan on August 25, 2003 @ 6:36 am
  2. I thought a bongo was drug paraphernalia. Out of the choices, I’m guessing C. Words in Swahili.

      » Comment by Kristine on August 25, 2003 @ 7:00 am
  3. I’m going with C. C what I mean?

      » Comment by Renee on August 25, 2003 @ 7:56 am
  4. I’ll say African Cities. A word like Dik-dik has to be a city, it just has to be.

      » Comment by jason on August 25, 2003 @ 7:57 am
  5. I vote for A.

      » Comment by Cameron on August 25, 2003 @ 8:23 am
  6. No, I take that back. A Dik-dik sounds like a type of deer-like animal, so I now officially go with D.

      » Comment by Cameron on August 25, 2003 @ 8:24 am
  7. Kudu sounds like fruit… Nope, I’m sticking with A.

Oh wait, have I head about an Eland Antelope before? In Canada maybe? I’m not sure, but I do know that a bongo is a drum. That’s probably intentionally misleading… I guess I’m still with A.

      » Comment by Jan on August 25, 2003 @ 8:53 am
  8. I’m guessing D, because Dan’s been on a thing about funky-named animals lately, especially the Dik-Dik.

      » Comment by Levi on August 25, 2003 @ 9:04 am
  9. The answer is in fact D, Antelopes. I saw an Addax recently and was surprised at how cool the name sounded. I did some research and found some of these rather strange names. Who comes up with those names anyway?

      » Comment by dan on August 25, 2003 @ 9:26 am
  10. Dan, I am sure that Addax will eventually be a common baby name in Utah, right Jan? ;)

      » Comment by Renee on August 25, 2003 @ 11:44 am
  11. I think Eland already is. Kudu has potential.

      » Comment by Jan on August 25, 2003 @ 1:13 pm
  12. Dang! I thought it was C.

      » Comment by Mel on August 25, 2003 @ 1:21 pm
  13. Renee: That’s not a bad idea. I would love to hear that family introduced. This is Addax, then Eland, Kudu and little Oryx is only three months old.

It would be hard to tell the gender from the name though, so if the child had the “SNL Pat” syndrome, it could be in for a very unpleasant childhood.

      » Comment by dan on August 25, 2003 @ 1:38 pm
  14. Half those crazy UT names are already difficult to figure gender on. And what about poor souls named Nephi that move East and have to chronically correct those calling them Neffy?

      » Comment by Renee on August 25, 2003 @ 3:58 pm
  15. I live in Lehi now, and there’s a lot of weird names in my branch. However, in regards to the quiz, “I win, I win” (Ok, name that movie).

How long you been in this country?
    4 days.
    Nice work!
    (Dan knows this movie)

      » Comment by Cameron on August 26, 2003 @ 8:54 am
  16. Shanghai Noon of course.

      » Comment by dan on August 26, 2003 @ 10:08 am
  17. they all sound like names you would find in the book of Mormon!

      » Comment by whaleman on August 26, 2003 @ 12:52 pm
  18. Dan, you got the second movie correct. The first movie is “Big Daddy” with Adam Sandler.

      » Comment by Cameron on August 27, 2003 @ 7:53 am
  19. In the antelope family what are the babies ,males, and females called PLEASE

      » Comment by Alan Foulkes on September 5, 2003 @ 5:38 pm
  20. The female is called a doe, the male is a buck and the baby is a calf. (via animal terms)

      » Comment by dan on September 6, 2003 @ 2:31 am
  21. I would say D. An Oryx, even though it’s an african game animal like the others, is much larger than an antelope. Tastes better too

      » Comment by kevin on September 10, 2003 @ 10:01 am
  22. definetely D

      » Comment by xxx on September 28, 2003 @ 8:32 pm
  23. dik dik and kudu are antelope but bongo is a drum so i choose C

      » Comment by xxx on September 28, 2003 @ 8:35 pm
  24. Antelopes

      » Comment by Sam on September 29, 2003 @ 7:05 am
  25. oryx & dik-diks are antelope so D although they could be names of antelope in Swahili, so maybe C?

      » Comment by Jessica on October 5, 2003 @ 10:39 am
  26. They are antelope indigenous to Africa.

      » Comment by Shiirley-Dean on October 6, 2003 @ 7:22 am
  27. Just by looking at them, I’m going to stick with D. I know what an Oryx is, so I figure D might be the one. I was going to go with C, but changed my mind.

      » Comment by rei A on October 14, 2003 @ 9:46 am
  28. They are all types of african dwelling antelops of the plains of the serenghetti-mahabahhwoo-laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-bing.blarp

      » Comment by maddie astonhead on October 29, 2003 @ 6:18 pm
  29. They are all instruments, of course.

      » Comment by Mythili on November 18, 2003 @ 3:05 am
  30. Duh. Antelopes, most (or all) are from Africa.

      » Comment by Susan on December 23, 2003 @ 4:50 pm
  31. It’s D, they’re all antelopes. How do I know? Let;s just say I watch a helluva lot of Discovery Television.

      » Comment by Anonymous on January 5, 2004 @ 12:17 pm
  32. well on my last visit to africa a Kudu was an antelope, but then again a bongo is a drum…?

      » Comment by speck on April 18, 2004 @ 9:53 am
  33. they’re all types of antelopes. TRUST me, the bongo is not only a drum, but a mammal as well! bwahahahahahahahahahaa

      » Comment by laura on April 22, 2004 @ 9:56 pm
  34. D
antelopes, although bongo is also a village in Ghana and an instrument, all the others are antelopes

      » Comment by joanne on May 16, 2004 @ 4:42 am
  35. i vote for A just feels like the right one

      » Comment by mike on May 20, 2004 @ 3:36 pm

      » Comment by Lee on June 22, 2004 @ 7:30 am
  37. Wow!! This is like, such an easy question, they are all antelopes of course!!!

» Comment by Seventh Grade Girl on October 15, 2004 @ 10:25 am
  38. erm… duh. I’m a seventh grader and even I know the answer to that one. OK sure Im obsessed with discovery channel, but that’s irrelevant. the answer is, as many other people have realized by now, D or antelopes. Gees… that was easy.
