Wouldn't we all :)

I am curious to see what people do to make money with blogs. Most of what I've seen consists of begging for donations and I doubt that will ever generate $1 million.

Then again, I heard that the Naked Cowboy earns a hearty $176K/year for playing the guitar in his underpants. Maybe there's hope after all.

The only way I can see people making big money is by advertising. As in a wildly popular blog would be approached by Coca-Cola to place an ad for lots of $$.

I read quite awhile back about people being paid by companies to hype products on message boards. This was thought to be more persuasive than ads because it's "authentic praise". It was for music or video games, I think. Maybe the same concept would be exploited on blogs.

Can you imagine a company creating a blog that seems like some totally witty, hip guy or girl is writing? They stick in posts about games they like, maybe a phenominal sneak preview they saw last weekend. But it's not real. It's a PR thing. It could happen.

Dr. Pepper/Seven Up tried that with Raging Cow but some bloggers tried to fight back with spoofs. There's an article about it too.

I am against the idea because it undermines the authentic realism people expect. If a blogger is being paid to blog, they may not be totally upfront in their entries to avoid doing anything that would upset their financial backers. How do you know when they're feeding you marketing talk and when they're being honest?

You don't. That's why it would have to be a very covert operation. And when it found out, it would not be a pretty scene.

I doubt a blogger would be able to keep it a secret long enough to make a million dollars. There's got to be an ethical way. I'll put my thinking cap on.
