Studies show that unprotected sex is growing rapidly among middle class+ gay men. There’s a growing movement in the gay community for people to actively seek out people with HIV to have relations with. Obviously, all STDs are spreading rapidly among that group–I live in a gay community, I see it all the time. You can’t do anything about someone who *wants* to get sick.

Problem is, AIDS is no longer a death sentence. They think modern science will save them. They don’t bother thinking outside themselves and the harm they’re bringing onto the community in the process, the lives they’re destroying by spreading it, the strain they’re putting on the health care system.

The fact is, most people in America know the risks associated with their activites but choose to partake anyway. Young people feel invincible despite knowing the odds, and get carried away in the passion of the moment without taking thought for the future. This is the source of all sorts of ‘ills’ in society, and always has been.

The question is, do we consign these impetuous kids to death for their lack of forethought, or do we make it a priority to open up a possible escape route for them to recover from their mistakes? You can’t educate away sexual desire, lack of responsibility, or excessive risk-taking. That comes through nature and experience. Unfortunately, experiencing AIDS is fatal and the learning comes too late for those to whom the dice aren’t kind.

If they know about it, I don’t understand why they don’t take precautions. The rising number in the US means people must have a death wish, or they don’t understand the risks.

I have mixed feelings on this. I’m generally anti-aids research in the U.S., because the people are educated about it, and by using some personal responsibility, can prevent it. There are many more diseases which are “innocent” which merit the money given out for AIDS research.
On the other hand, Africa is a serious problem. The people over there are not educated on what causes AIDS, and don’t think it’s an STD. I would say I’m in favor of educating those in 3rd world countries and trying to find a way to alleviate their suffering.

Daaah! I looked at the list of countries and it’s not-so-up-to-date number of deaths attributed to aids. Sweet deadly monkeys, stay OUT of Africa. If you have to go don’t have sex there, or better yet go in poly-urithane tank.
