My finance and I have been together for 9 years and he just asked me to marry him, we have 3 kids and can only afford around $5,000.00 for our wedding and reception. There are around 150 friends and family that we want to invite, any advise will help on how to make this all come together.

At my wedding I was in a court room with my family members in the audience. I had a many appetizer-party afterwards at my home. I spent about 2 or 300 dollars.

I am also trying to plan a wedding on a budget. Mine is $10,000. Although my parents are willing and able to help (I am the only daughter)it seems absurd to "blow the whole wad" on a party, when we will need a washer/dryer a refrigerator etc. after the party! I have the mixed fortune of being in Hawaii where it is paradise but everything cost too much. For example the catering menu I got from the Hyatt @17.50pp is $4.50pp in my home town yacht club. I am so "over" talking to snobby caterers and flakey coordinators. If someone could give me a good idea I might still go through with it. I am the point where I want to send announcement cards and go on my honeymoon and call it a day. So much for the dream......

One more reason to get married soon. Or, perhaps even better, not at all! Hmm. Well, we'll see.

I don't know about the accuracy of $22,000 for the *average* wedding. I know alot of average people, me being one of them, and they don't have $22,000 to spend on a wedding. Our wedding, which you were a part of may have looked expensive but in the end only cost around $5k-$6k. They don't have to be expensive and I think alot of hype is placed around it to make women feel obligated to bankrupt their parents in order to celebrate that special moment. Bah, you don't even remember half of it anyway!

True, but if you take your wedding ($5K) and the wedding of the couple in the article ($42K) the average is $23,500. I don't doubt that there are a lot of people who spend less than $10K, but there are also a lot of people spending way more than that, so the average ends up being rather high.

Or you could just take the singles route and not have to spend anything :)

Or you could take a trip to Vegas and get married by Elvis! Just as legal, very memorable (though perhaps not in a good way), and very cheap! Do your part in fighting marriage cost inflation!

Well, I wish someone would tell me how to plan a wedding under $5,000.00! My fiance and I are the only one's paying for it, and we are just starting out in our careers, but have been together for 7 years. Both of us refuse to wait another 3 years, just to have to empty out our saving for a weedding, by then we want to buy a home.

Hm... I don't know. I've been to 3 weddings in the past 2 years costing over $35,000! I think it is insane to spend that much, unless (maybe) you are a millionaire. Most of the others do cost about $20,000, with not many guests and nothing super fancy. Of course, I'm near Detroit, so maybe that is why things are so expensive.

This couple only paid $2,600 for their wedding, but they had to cut a lot of corners to do it. Then for their honeymoon they went on a $4,000 vacation to Hawaii and bought $8,000 worth of furniture when they got back.
