when politics and science collide

It’s possible that the Salt Palace Convention Center was built on a fault. When construction began the workers found some disturbed ground, but enough controversy existed regarding the cause that the politicians decided to continue. It’s important that politicians pay attention to science, but what do you do when science doesn’t have a clear answer?

In the end, it may not even matter, as the closing statement of the article points out.

If there were a major earthquake on the Wasatch fault, the damage to Salt Lake City would be so large that the fate of the convention centre would pale in comparison.”
